From my point of view I would say that having access to support from Hetty's and WAM has been invaluable to a number of my patients with drug use in their families, and has often made the difference between drug users in treatment keeping the support of their families rather than losing it. People are helped to understand what is happening in the life of their child/sibling/parent with a drug problem, and this understanding enables meaningful communication, and can be a vital part of a drug users recovery. It can also enable families to gain "permission" to protect themselves from a very chaotic user who is abusing their love, so that the rest of the family is not devasted by the detructive behaviour of an individual. The family is then strengthened to be able to provide support to the user when they are ready to accept it and make changes.
